Feb 27, Tattoos as Spiritual Practice

Tattoo artist Vyvyn Lazonga or Madame Lazonga as she is known began tattooing more than 30 years ago at a time when there was very few female tattoo artists around. For many years she has been an advocate on the importance of tattooing in peoples' quest to connect with the divine. In a recent article with SF Gate she discusses the spiritual side of tattoo art. In the article she talks about "Polynesian and Southeast Asian cultures where the tattooist is seen as someone doing spiritual work for the community and tattoo art which is often seen as a visible prayer. Similarly in the the United States people get tattoos to commemorate a loved one's death, the birth of a child, a career change, a divorce or a marriage. Any kind of big transformation, any rite of passage, can be, and often is, marked with a tattoo." She also mention the point of pain in which she notes that "experiencing pain is almost outlawed in our society. We'll do anything to avoid it. But with tattooing and other body modifications the pain is consensual and intentional. It's pain with a purpose." More importantly in response to the widely held beliefs that tattooing is a sin she says "getting tattooed is a way of taking all of that back. You know, just recognizing that your body, whatever shape it's in, is worthy of being art. That it is sacred, and that you are doing this intentional thing to it on purpose with a particular intent. That you care enough to decorate your temple."
